Personal life I never really knew how bad gaming addictions can be in someone’s life before reading this article. Without no knowledge I some people would think that people who have gaming addictions are just people who like to play games all day long and not to something else with their time. But after reading this article I know that backstory to peoples gaming addictions has a deeper meaning. While I was researching, I found an interesting article that gave a lot of statistical information in relation to gaming. One piece of information that really stuck out to me was ' In light of the latest conceptual a...

Game Testing

Image
This week’s reading was about game playtesting, playtesting is a process where a game designer tests their game for bugs and design flaws before releasing it. I read some articles on playtesting to know more about it. And I will be giving my thoughts on them in this blog.     Image source: FutureGames The first article was “Seven Different Types of game Testing Techniques” the article talks about how important game testing is and gives 7 detailed techniques, I think this articles information is a good guide on what to do or what not to do when wanting to make a playable version of your game. For example, it has a list of some major risks in game testing: If the game doesn’t create a compelling experience for the niche audience If the fun factor missing in the games The game doesn’t include a player-centric design If the Game is not unique, fast-paced, or competitive The gaming app fails because of broken features, poor video, technical ...

Game Stories

Image
On this week reading tasks I read some articles on what are  stories in games and how to make them better. Image Source: PreviewsWorld The first article I read was “ what every game developer needs to know about story ” by John Sutherland. The article talks about how stories are important in games, people want more meaning when they are playing games. Graphics and visual are cool but they don’t give players much sustenance. It also talks about how game developers can know more about classical story structure to make a simple but effective story and it saves time. Advice game developers could take is the three-art structure Climax, fall, closure.     Overall, the article gave some interesting information of what game developers should consider if they want to make good story for a game. The article would be very helpful and would be a good guide if I wanted to make a professional game. Image source: Wikipedia The second article I read was Mass Effect 2: A case s...

Week 9 Reading and Writing

Image
Overall, I think the reading and writing assignments worked out well for me. In terms of the reading posts, I have gotten better at writing and developed an interest into reading articles. In terms of the gaming post’s, I have learned the process of how to make a  game. By reading the articles and materials related to making a game I have achieved a good guide of what to do and what not to do.     Out of all the readings I have done so far, I think my favorite reading would be “How to Write a Game Design Document". It’s my favorite reading because it helped me to understand what type of game I wanted to create and gave me ideas of what other elements I could put in the game. It helped me keep my vision of the game and not stray off the key elements and mechanics of the game.   I think my reading notes are helping me each week with my game. As they help me focus on what is important when making the game. And help to know what to things I should implemen...

Game Fun

Image source: CK Blog Gamification is when game like elements like point systems and badges are implemented into nongame contexts to get engagement and motivation. The paper talks about “fun” and gives a deeper meaning of it in terms of gamification. In my opinion I didn’t enjoy reading the paper "Gamification design: what's fun got to do with it"  , it did give some good insights of fun when making a game, like how it is the desired outcome of a game and not necessarily a building block. I personally think it could have had some interesting information in it.       Links to some interesting  information on gamification and fun i...

Image source:  Rondos In this blog I’m going to talk about my thoughts on the pieces I read the, article" Building a Princess saving app" and the academic paper on “Flow experience on game playing among Thai University” .   The article on building a princess was kind of hard to understand, but I get what its overall was message was. The article talked about how games work and how you can build learning and fun into apps. I thought the article was a good read as it’s information on games made me think about my game idea in a new light and I think of how I can my make my game keep the interest of the p...

Games GDD

Image
By reading these papers I was able to get a better insight on Game design development, and its importance. Game Developer , Communication and Game Design Documents . A game design document is a document that contains the main objectives of a game and ideas from the Game development team. The document is work between designers, artists and programmers, it is used to guide them  throughout the game development process and make sure they stay on track and meet their goals. The document  also serves as another way to keep good communication with the development team.  From reading this paper ( Communication and Game Design Documents ) I have understood the importance of game design documents. I think they are necessary for a game development team so ideas can be communicated clearly which will lead to the game objectives being met and making a good quality game.  Game design documents are really important as it is a beneficial step in the process of making a g...

Games MDA

Image
Today I’m going to talk about some frameworks used to help in game design and game research. Source:  Medium The first paper that I’m going to talk about is MDA: A formal approach to game design and game research. The paper talks about MDA (which stands for Mechanics, Dynamics, and Aesthetics) which is a framework used to analyze games. It makes it easier for all parties in the game development process to decompose, study and design a broad class of game designs and artifacts. The paper refers MDA as design methodology, design methodology help guide the creative thought process and help ensure quality work. I think MDA is a very interesting approach to help with game design and research. Because the main elements you’re looking for is Mechanisms, Dynamics, And Aesthetics so you get a good idea of the type of information you should look for and the type of design you would want to achieve.   Overall, I think that this paper gave helpful information on what to and...
