Games MDA
Today I’m going to talk about some frameworks used to help in game design and game research.
The first
paper that I’m going to talk about is MDA: A formal approach to game design and
game research. The paper talks about MDA (which stands for Mechanics, Dynamics,
and Aesthetics) which is a framework used to analyze games. It makes it easier for
all parties in the game development process to decompose, study and design a
broad class of game designs and artifacts. The paper
refers MDA
as design methodology, design methodology help guide the creative thought
process and help ensure quality work. I think MDA is a very interesting approach
to help with game design and research. Because the main elements you’re looking
for is Mechanisms, Dynamics, And Aesthetics so you get a good idea of the type
of information you should look for and the type of design you would want to achieve.
Overall, I think
that this paper gave helpful information on what to and what not to do when you’re
in the game design and game research. It mentions other frameworks, but I think
MDA is a good one because its not too complex and its straightforward.
The second paper that I’m going to discuss talks about another framework, DDE (Design Dynamics and Experience) for computer and video games. It talks more about MDA and talks about some of its weakness, one of its major weaknesses is that “It neglects many design aspects of games focusing too much on game mechanics”. MDA was a frequently used framework for professional game designs, to overcome its weakness DDE was now used for professional game design. I think DDE is better than MDA because it focuses more on experience, and I think that’s one of the key elements that should be focused on for better quality research which will lead to a game were players are satisfied by the components.
